Gluttony...the hidden sin.

As we have continued in our study at church called "Seven daily sins" which is based on the 7 deadly sins in the bible, we study this week on gluttony. Why do we not talk and preach on this sin? Maybe it is because we love food so much! I have to admit this lesson really spoke to me. So let's see what the scripture says:

Proverbs 23:2

2 and put a knife to your throat

if you are given to gluttony.

Proverbs 23:21-22

21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,

and slumber will clothe them with rags.

1 Corinthians 6:12

12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

Galatians 5:16-26

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Philippians 3:19

19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things.

Now here is the key to gluttony....the sin is not the food itself, the sin is over indulgence. Over eating or drinking hurts us in many areas not just our health. The most hurtful way is sin against God. God desires for us to have self-control. Eat what we need not gorge ourselves so that we feel miserable. How much food do we waste in our bellies that could be used to help those in need. Ever thought about that?

So think on gluttony today...hope you are not like me cause this one hit me right between the eyes!
