Revelation #10

Alright let's look at another church:

Revelation 2:18-29

To the Church in Thyatira

18"And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: 'The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

19 "'I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants[a] to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works. 24But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. 25Only hold fast what you have until I come. 26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28And I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'

This church represents the historical church age of 500 A.D.-1500A.D. Historically there is not much known about this city. It was a buffer city against advancing armies towards Pergamos. They were known for there for purple coloring dye and that was a sizable industry for them. The church was in a sad state in these "Dark Ages". There wasn't much drive towards God or towards reaching others with the gospel.

So in verse 18 Jesus is introduced as being the Son of God, with eyes of fire which represent judgement and bronze feet represent He will crush His enemies. In verse 19 gives encouragement to the true believers. He knows their works, faith, love, service, and endurance. Also that they are getting better as their works are better then they used to be. Then comes the bad news in verse 20. They have allowed a women into the church who was teaching heresy. Now this could be a literal woman or it could be symbolism. Reguardless she would not repent of her sin (sexual and spiritual immorality). So Jesus in verse 2 tells that she will be punished along with all that follow her! This is a warning to liberal churches who do not listen and repent to the Word of God! In verse 23 Jesus talks about "striking her children dead" this refers to those who are offsprings of the faulty teachings of this doctrine. God also reminds us in these verse we are accountable individually! Then in verse 24 Jesus tells the faithful followers if you hold strong to God's word He will not burden. In verse 25 Jesus reminds them to hold strong until he comes and in verse 26 Jesus tells us when we conquer we will have authority over nations! Verses 25-27 refer to the Millennial reign of Christ. In verse 28 the morning star is Jesus. And in verse 29 reminds us once again to listen!

See you tomorrow!

Tom
